#AHPsActive gets #WinterActive

Friday 11th December 2015 by @WeAHPs

It’s winter here in the UK. The days are shorter, darker, wetter and colder. There’s been a lot of rain too.  With most weekday daylight hours spent workingindoors it’s harder to take part in physical activity, but daylight andexercise are important for our physical and mental health during the winter. Here at #WeAHPs we’ve been reflecting on our own activity levels over the pastcouple of months. With new jobs and busy home lives it’s fair to say the weeks have flown by and we’ve not done as much as we’d like to – so we’ve decided it’s time for a quick pre-Christmas #AHPsActive campaign.

#AHPsActive

Back in August we ran the first #AHPsActive initiative, including a competition with #WeNurses. We had an amazing response - you can watch our video here andread our blog from@exerciseworks and @FabNHSStuffentry here. Sunshine and summer holidays meant fantastic photos and a greatrange of activities: beach Zumba, camel riding, mountain climbing, tug-of-warand kayaking were just a few examples.

But in many countries it can be harder to get out and active during winter months, so we’d like to harness the collective motivating force of the #WeAHPs community to get #WinterActive. In the run-up to Christmas andNew Year’s Day we’d like you to tweet your #AHPsActive photos - images that bestcapture physical activity as something that is achievable and enjoyable duringthe winter.  We’d also like you to tweetany tips, advice, useful links or information on local activities.

Our aims are the same as earlier in the year, we want to:

  • motivate, support and inspire ourselves, colleagues, families and friends and raise the profile of the importance ofpeer support and role modelling in physical activity
  • promote the importance of physical activity forphysical and mental health
  • highlight AHPs contribution to workforce andpublic health
  • practice what we teach/preach as health and carestaff
  • create a sense of community
  • pre-empt the season of indulgence and subsequentNew Year’s resolutions!

To keep the momentum going from the summer we’d like you touse the #AHPsActive hashtag, but you can use #WinterActive as well (if you haveenough space).

We'll share your winter #AHPsActive pics below once you find the time to get #WinterActive and share them.

Thank you…

As our last blog for this year we’d like to take thisopportunity to thank you all for your support over the past year, we’ve loved developingthis AHP community with you and are looking forward to building on this in2016. Take a look at ourvision for what we’re aiming to achieve and tweet us your ideas for nextyear.

Best wishes for the holiday season,

Jo, Naomiand Helen
