Continuing professional development (CPD) is often described using a variety of terms including but not exclusively life-long learning and/or continuing nursing education. CPD is important because it ensures health care professionals continue to be competent in their profession.The new nursing revalidation model, due to go on-line on December 2015, will require that nurses undertake at least 40 hours of CPD every three years, up from the current minimum of 35 hours. In addition, half of this requirement (20 hours) will have to be committed to ‘participatory’ learning activities, such as seminars, learning workshops, shadowing other colleagues (RCN, 2014).

CPD is an ongoing process and continues through out a professional’s career. CPD offers an opportunity for personalised learning and offers both nurses and managers the opportunity to shape nursing careers,ultimately improving the patient pathway. However it is also important for manager’s to support nurses' continual learning and to allow time for this.

CPD doesn’t need to be painful and sometimes the smallest acts can be the most powerful. Reading journal articles, learning new techniques, supervising learners and even engaging in this evenings twitterchat (Morley & Chinn, 2015) all constitutes CPD activity. The key is to ensure you take the “paper evidence” of attendance and take time to write-up your learning. Reflect on what you have learnt, how this links to your current practice and how it will aid in your development as a professional.

About our Guest Hosts


Rakhee Rankin Rakhee is a mental health nurse and has been at UWE for 11 years; with a current role of Associate head of Department in Nursing & Midwifery (Faculty of Health and Applied Science, University of the West of England, Bristol) with responsibility for CPD.  Rakhee has been responsible for leading two tender proposals and winning bids for educational provision for the community; primary; acute and urgent care multi-professional workforces.  She will be responsible in implementing the outcomes of the bids over the next three years ensuring they meet the needs of our partners and learners alike.

Janice St. John-Matthews (@jstjohnmatthews) Janice qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in 2001 and has worked in the NHS, private sector and higher education. Currently Janice works as the Allied Health Professions CPD Lead for the Faculty of Health and Applied Science at the University of the West of England,Bristol.  She is a voluntary policy board member for the British Association of Magnetic Resonance Radiographers (BAMRR),a not for profit organisation whose aim is to promote education and knowledge of MRI by encouraging and facilitating CPD for individuals working within this branch of medical imaging. Her passion for CPD started in 2008 when she was appointed to the role of Education and Development manager for a national imaging company. One of her roles in this post was to act as the organisation's CPD champion which included assisting clinical staff in the transition to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) CPD audit process. This is conducted on a two yearly cycle  with the first audit of radiographers commencing in December 2009. Janice commences a Professional Doctorate in Education of theHealthcare Professional at Swansea University in the Autumn.
