NHS England published a joint letter by Dr Dominic Slowe and Dr Keith Ridge in July 2015 (The use of medicines in people with learning disabilities), citing evidence of inappropriate use of psychotropic medicines within this vulnerable group. Psychotropic medicines are defined as antipsychotics, antidepressants, benzodiazepines, antiepileptics, mood stabilisers, CNS stimulants and anti-dementia medication.
Psychotropic medicines, particularly antipsychotics, can be used ‘inappropriately…to control behaviour’. They call for a national piece of work to be undertaken, in a similar way to the reduction of the inappropriate use of antipsychotics in dementia.
Several areas across the country have made progress in tackling this issue but it is not consistent. Join us on Tuesday 18th April for a joint pharmacy and nursing MDT chat, where we will be discussing this important area including the following prompts:
- Are you aware of any work being undertaken in your area? Any examples of successes or challenges?
- Have there been any unintended consequences of the work?
- Have we got the competence to undertake medication or prescribing reviews?
- How can we gain the competence?
- How do we ensure we do not need to repeat this work in 5 years’ time?
