#WeAHPs - Thursday 30th March 2017 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Expanding horizons: leading across boundaries

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeAHPs using #WeAHPs

This chat is guest hosted by @NaomiMcVey @jkfillingham

For our tweetchat on Thursday 20th March we will be discussing leadership again – this time we want to think critically about what it means to work and lead across professions, organisations and/or regions as an AHP, in both AHP and non-AHP leadership roles.  We’ll be thinking about the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours we need to do this well, how these are currently supported and developed, and the challenges and opportunities associated with multi-professional and systems-leadership roles.

Over the past few months we’ve seen a number of senior and very senior healthcare roles shared on twitter: NHS associate director and director AHP roles, programme directors, clinical advisers, third sector director and chief executive roles, and more – all of which could be applied for and filled by AHPs. NHS re-structures over the past few years have also seen a reduction in traditional uni-professional leadership roles and structures. As more of these roles are developed, available and promoted we how can we ensure career development for individual professions prepares us for being effective leaders across traditional and professional boundaries? What is the impact on patient care and experience, quality, recruitment and retention if we don't get this right?

Pre-chat resources:

Questions to think about before the chat:

  1. Does leading multi-professionally differ to leading uni-professionally? What are the differences we need to be aware of and develop our skills in?
  2. What knowledge, skills, values and behaviours we need to lead across professions and organisations?
  3. Do current leadership programmes and development opportunities support AHPs to take on strategic, multi-professional roles?
  4. What is the impact on patients and staff if leaders don;t have the right skills and values to lead across professions?
  5. What gaps in leadership development need addressing for more AHPs to move into senior roles? How can we fill these?
