Pre chat information written by Anne Cooper (@Anniecoops)

In 2016 the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) celebrated its 100 years anniversary. The College reflected on the stages in its history as it became the largest professional organisation for nursing staff in the world.  In 2018 the RCN aims to look forward using its strong heritage and membership to help prepare for the future of nursing. I will soon be launching, in partnership with the RCN, an online workshop to assess the impact of technology and data on nursing so we can make sure we improve and modernise the care we offer.  This is a profession wide issue, it’s no longer a specialist one.   As we move further into the digital age, everyone will be expected to practice in new and modern ways.

In some ways nursing today still looks like the past. We still care for people and the human connection is a vital part of what we do. Today the tools we use are very different; technology and data are becoming more common place. Over the last five years we have seen a significant shift in the adoption of technology in the general population.  In 2017 90% of households have internet access, in contrast with 2006 when it was 57%. Since 2006, when 8% of adults in Great Britain said they used the internet daily, in 2017 it is 80%.  In 2017 the most common device used to access the internet was a smartphone.  Nursing can’t ignore these changes that are happening around us and these things are causing us to flex and adapt the work we do.

Some nursing staff already document all their work electronically and use mobile devices. Public health nurses use data to track the success of health programmes such as vaccinations for children. Technology is pervading and influencing nursing practice.

Sometimes practitioners find that technology is imposed without fair discussion. The RCN has heard stories over the years of how technology fails to meet the needs of nursing staff. Evidence shows that nurses may not be involved in decisions that relate to technology adoption; in an evidence synthesis in 2009, Kings College it concludes:

‘Very little is known about the nurses’ role in the speed and success with which technological innovations become part of day-to-day clinical practice, or how nurses respond to the (often) mandated adoption and top-down implementation of such innovations, and how these responses impact upon the potential longer-term benefits of the technology in question.’

In 2012 the RCN undertook a study (see footnote) to discover whether nursing staff were confidant participants in eHealth. Nursing staff told us of some of the barriers that prevent them from benefiting from ICT. Since then much has changed. Technology has evolved at pace with the development of mobile technology, apps, big data and the arrival of artificial intelligence. Organisations need to keep up with the rate of change as more technology is deployed across the whole system.

We want to understand what has changed for you, if anything.

Most people acknowledge that health and social care needs to change and modernise. Each country in the UK has plans for health and social care that promote the use of technology and data. They see them as a way to meet citizen’s healthcare needs including modern nursing care; that is care that is in step with the changes in everyday life and makes the best use of the tools available.  We want to know what opportunities nursing staff see for the use of technology to care for people.

At congress in 2016 a motion was proposed that the RCN should lobby for every nurse being an e-nurse, that is able to use technology and data to maximum effect for patients, carers and service users.  Sometimes we refer to this as the ‘digital agenda’.  The time is right to ask some big questions.  Are we, as a profession, keeping pace with the potential of technology?  Are we using it to improve outcomes for patients and service users?  Are we more effective and efficient in the ways we work?

Before RCN Congress in May 2018, we will formally in an online and in some face to face workshops ask the nursing community about these issues, asking:

  • What will the digital future of nursing look like?
  • What are the things that will enable us to get the best out of these tools?
  • What are the things that might stand in our way?
  • What are the great examples where things are working, that we can share with the wider community?

We want to learn from nursing staff what we can do to realise the potential of technology and data.  Then we will see the benefit for the people we work with and also nursing staff themselves.

In the chat we will start to explore these big questions and we will use what we learn to help us in the consultation, so please join in and help us to frame the digital future of nursing.
