#WeNurses - Tuesday 16th January 2018 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Transforming perceptions of nursing and midwifery

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @HelenBevan @HilaryGarratt @BevMatthewsRN

(Pre chat information adapted from the Transforming perceptions of nursing and midwifery platform)

If you’re anything like us, you’re passionate about nursing and midwifery and spreading the word about the fantastic, diverse and committed people that makeup our community. Here’s your chance to do just that!

The transforming perceptions of nursing and midwifery campaign has been commissioned by Professor Jane Cummings, in 2018 we’ll be looking to implement and deliver game-changing ideas to support the future of nursing. You can be involved in this by helping us find those ideas and the best approach for next year’s campaigns to promote our wonderful profession.

Through this campaign, we want young people to know about the breadth and depth of careers available to them through the nursing and midwifery route; we want teachers to promote nursing and midwifery as career of choice in schools. For example, the opportunities offered by a career in the nursing and midwifery professions have never been better: with roles ranging from the essential day-to-day caring responsibilities that immediately spring to mind when we think of a nurse or midwife – to the highly technical, research, executive leadership - and many more.

We want nurses and midwives to reignite their pride in the profession, to see the value for them as individuals, and to promote it as a career within their organisations and within the wider public.

And we want the system leaders to champion the nursing and midwifery professions to ensure that we cover the shortfall, we retain our nurses, and we attract and keep the very best talent to this incredibly important career.

All of us recognise the vital role that the nursing and midwifery professions play in the day-to-day running of our health and social care services, and for providing the very best care for people at every stage of our lives. By 2020 the NHS will be treating increasing numbers of people, and caring for an ageing population with more complex needs. We are also facing challenges around recruiting and retaining nursing and midwifery staff, which means this campaign is critically important for the health and care service.

This #WeNurses tweetchat is part of the first sprint of this campaign and seeks to ask the following questions:

  • What do nurses and midwives do?
  • What kind of people are nurses and midwives?
  • What kinds of careers are available to people who become nurses and midwives?
  • What one practical thing do you think could be done to transform perceptions?
  • How do these professions contribute to today’s health and care system – and how can we safeguard them for the future?

We invite you to join in the twitter conversation to share your perspectives and thoughts and to add your voice in this vital discussion,

You can also log on to the Transforming perceptions of nursing and midwifery platform and let us know your opinions. We have put the focus on three key groups: young people in education making career choices; nurses and midwives; and system leaders. Click here to share your ideas and stories!
