Facing the facts, shaping the future for AHPs

The first ever system-wide draft strategy and consultation for health and social care services in England was published in December 2017.

“Facing thefacts, shaping the future. A draft health and care workforce strategy for England to 2027” sets out the current workforce landscape, what has been achieved since 2012, the work underway and describe an approach to shaping the face of the NHS and social care workforce for the next two decades. It also condenses and considers the outputs of major workforce plans for the prioritieslaid out in the Five Year Forward View – cancer, mental health, maternity,primary and community care and urgent and emergency care.

It is important that AHP services, organisations contribute to the consultation to ensure the AHP workforce is fit for the future, and that we achieve the ambitions set out in AHPs into Action.

We would therefore like to invite you take part in a supporting tweetchat on Thursday 15th March at 8.30pm to discuss the strategy, implications for AHPsand how to get involved in the consultation. We will be joined by Beverley Harden, national lead for AHPs at Health Education England. 

This tweetchat will focus on supporting AHPs to contribute to the online forum and to inform the AHP team within HEE about what matters to your services. This will enable AHP issues to be constructively understood and fed into the strategic feedback.  

Questions to think about ahead of the tweetchat

  1. What are the key things we should all be doing secure our future supply of AHPs coming into our professions?
  2. What are the main activities we should be doing to increase student placements, prepare for apprenticeships, and broaden exposure to different environments e.g. primary care, learning disability?
  3. What are the key workforce developments AHPs should be focussing on to maximise our impact and value?
  4. How can we better articulate career paths for AHPs - signposting people better to opportunities?
  5. What does the AHP workforce of the future look like, what should we all be doing to influence it and how do we enable it to thrive?
  6. What are the top 3 things about AHP workforce that together we should pay attention to?

The consultationwill run until 17:00 Friday 23 March 2018 so please have your say. It is vital that the voice of AHPs is heard through the formal routes to make sure that all comments are taken into account - you can formally respond online or join the online workshop at  https://consultation.hee.nhs.uk. Workforce is all our business, wherever we work whatever we do.
