#WeCYPNs - Tuesday 10th March 2015 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Caring for children & young people: so what’s different?

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeCYPnurses using #WeCYPNs

The World Health Organisation’s phrase ‘Children are not just small adults’ was recognised in healthcare back in 1959 by the Platt report. Children have specific needs which need to be recognised and met in order to expedite recovery.

The @WeCYPnurses community represents a profession that has been born from this theory and one that we are very proud to belong to. The 6 C’s apply to all healthcare professionals over all disciplines and are not and should not be different for children. They still need us to be caring, compassionate, courageous, committed, and competent and have good communication.

And in addition, an in depth knowledge of Cbeebies, Minecraft, and an ability to sing any Disney song are strengths that every paediatric nurse must acquire, to be able to connect with the children that we care for and provide comfort.

The main philosophy of children’s nursing is family centred care, recognising that, in most cases, children and young people are best cared for by their parents, or by other people that they know well. Children’s nurses also recognise that, where possible, children and young people should be cared for in, or as close as possible to, their own homes (NMC 2010) Family centred care is a core value that we aspire to and keeping children out of hospital when at all possible.

This first @WeCYPNurses chat aims to discuss the following:

• What makes children’s needs so different?

• What qualities make us as CYP Nurses different?

• Do CYP nurses need to be especially emotionally tough to face the immense sadness that we see?

• Can it be argued that children can adequately be cared for by adult trained nurses?

• In what circumstances?

• What strengths do adult nurses have that could be beneficial for caring for children?

• Should more pre-registration students be experiencing the care of children and young people at programme level, despite their chosen field?

 Chat Summary

Tuesday 10th March 2015 marked @WeCYPnurses first twitter chat, and we here at #WeCYPNs certainly feel like we started with a bang! With 68 contributors, 484 tweets, and a reach of 912,067 - we are thankful for each and every person who got involved and are feeling especially positive about future chats!

With Tuesday's chat being the first from @WeCYPnurses we felt that it would be beneficial to open with a very broad subject. A sort of ice breaker, that would hopefully attract not only those who work with CYPs but also those who may be intrugued as to how we (as CYPNs) believe that it is vastly different to other fields.

And we saw some fantastic opinions!

An especially important point that seemed to frequently pop up was the focus on "family centred care" within CYP nursing. With many contributors agreeing that as professionals who work with CYP we often take on the entire family and/or carers when we care for CYP, with other contributors also pointing out that this is present across all fields however in CYP nursing it is crucial. There was also discussion regrading how this can often present difficulties.

So that led us to wonder... What skills do professionals who work with CYP need?

So as a result, with all the fun that we have the potential to have when working with CYPs - how to we manage when the going gets tough?

It was great discussing how CYP nursing is different! However we here at @WeCYPnurses had a burning question that we wanted to ask, and wanted to shake things up a bit so we wanted to know if people thought that adult trained nurses could adequately care for CYP? What strengths do they have that may be beneficial for caring for CYP?

And finally! We wanted to know if people thought that pre-registration students should be experiencing more exposure to CYP when training, no matter what their chosen field.

Just like that, our first chat was over! And we were left with the feeling that yes caring for CYP is different, however everyone from across all branches can learn from each other and share skills.
Thankyou for all who got involved - transcript is available below to see all of the fantastic ideas, opinions and discussions that went on!
