#WeNurses - Thursday 20th September 2018 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Nursing shortages ... what's the solution?

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

We have all seen the news - yes you know which news ..... there are no nurses ! Of course we don't need to actually read the news to realise this as we all see it every working day .. however here is the long and short of it:

"NHS Digital’s quarterly update detailing vacancy rates for a range of health professionals also showed that the number of unfilled advertised nursing and midwifery posts in England reached 34,260 in the three months to September – the highest level since records began"

"Across England as a whole, only one in seven of all empty nursing posts were filled."

"The number of nursing vacancies has jumped by 2,626 (8.3%) over the past year from 31,634 to 34,260"

(Source: The Guardian 2018)

This #WeNurses aims to, quite simply (!), brainstorm the solution to this ever growing problem of "we have no nurses!" We will be asking the following questions:

  • Why are there no nurses?
  • What can be done in the short term?
  • What wheels do we need to set in motion now to fix the shortage of nurses in the long term?
  • What should be included in our long term plans to address recruitment of nurses?
  • What should be included in our long term plans to address retention of nurses?
  • What one thing can each of us implement tomorrow to work towards increasing numbers of nurses?

@NRCUK
20 September 2018 20:12

A2 look after those you have got, make the culture better - Speak up and be allowed to be equal to all - No bad culture - Maybe also look at tax breaks like other countries do but that must cover ALL NHS/Public Sector staff #wenurses
@EllzSummary
20 September 2018 20:14
@WeNurses -UK trained fewer than required & overly relied on increased numbers of 1948-1964 aged nurses who are now retiring - UK traditionally recruited from overseas, UK is a less hospitable and financially attracted climate for overseas workers -Value, pay T&C aren't great #WeNurses
@NRCUK
20 September 2018 20:14
This is my point, do we need more nurses, we just need to change how we work with the ones out there? But more is always NHS answer, more money, more beds... and lever looking at working smart to reduce demand & staff pressure #wenurses https://t.co/JEstxzJiav

@WeNurses They're a short-term solution to 'hands on deck' but they dilute the numbers of RN available even more which isn't good for patient safety. It isn't a solution at all really if it doesn't deal with RNs don't stay in the workforce. #WeNurses
