#WeStudentAHPs - Tuesday 9th October 2018 7:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Benefits/Potential Pitfalls of Social Media #WeStudentAHPs

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

This chat is guest hosted by @julie_bolter

Social media has many benefits and it is always nice to focus on the positives in life, however when it comes to using social media as professionals and professional students, the potential hazards can be detrimental. This has prompted the theme for today’s Student Takeover tweetchat - ‘The benefits and risks of social media’ using the HCPC guidance and codes of conduct to support discussion.

We welcome as many questions as possible so that we can explore ways to get the most out of social media, whist avoiding any pitfalls. Whether you are brand new to social media or a well-established tweeter your contributions will be equally valuable.

Here are some questions to think about prior to the chat...

  • What are the benefits of social media?
  • What are the potential pitfalls of social media?
  • Should our personal and professional lives be separated, if so why and how?
  • If you were unsure on something you have seen on social media or unsure about something you want to post where could you seek advice?

 Chat Summary

This tweet chat explored the many benefits and potential pitfalls of social media. Some of the key themes included

  • Sharing – Social media can break down boundaries and is a fantastic place to share and learn from others. It can also be a useful CPD tool.
  • It can take time to get use to social media – It was said that social media can be overwhelming sometimes. However, information is normally repeated and the benefit of this is the easy access to current issues or evidence. You can always filter using #’s to look at areas you are interested in.
  • Communication styles. The majority of the communication on social media is written, therefore it is important to be mindful of how your words could be interpreted. Our posts on social media can reach a wide audience, but this is one of the many advantages. For example, AHPs Day started with a post on twitter and spread around the country and beyond. Emjois were discussed as a method of overcoming miss interpretation.
  • Professionalism – These discussions centred around the HCPC or professional bodies guidelines. There are positive and negative case studies on the HCPC webpage to enable students and professionals to gain a sense of the responsibility they have when using social media.  It was also mentioned that universities or trusts should have additional guidance or information that is worth reading, especially if your posting about placement or your university. The communications teams might be a good place to start. Finally, accountability and implications are the same and as important as they are ‘off’ social media.
  • The separation of private and personal accounts was varied. But the general conclusion seemed to be as long as you remain professional and adhere to guidance from your professional bodies it is down to personal preference.

  • Networking – social media can be a fantastic place to link with people in similar professions or with similar interests. It can also be a great place to gain peer support.
  • Opportunities – this can be through new networks you have made or just hearing about projects, jobs or events. Others shared how they have learnt about the diversity of other professions on social media.

  • Promote our professions and good practice

A key message throughout the chat was to engage with social media with kindness and authenticity. If you’re not sure ask, we are all here to help.
