Hello and welcome to our first guest chat between WeStudentNurses and WeDistrictNurses. #WeStns
Community placements in pre-registration programmes are a vital part of the learning experience for all student nurses. However, there is often a lot of misconceptions about what goes on in community and the role ofcommunity nurses. Community nursing teams are normally led by a district nurse who has an additional post registration qualification and work in a variety of ways to deliver services in the community.
Some of the misconceptions out there are that community nurses tend to do leg dressings, drink tea and eat cakes. This could not be further from the truth. While wound care is an important element of nursing in the community, in reality community nursing involves complexity and involves the following:
Person centred – not condition-focused
Understanding of families, carers, and communities
Self-management, enablement and prevention
Understand complex needs
Reduce unnecessary hospital admissions
Palliative and end of life care
Public health intervention
This chat will explore how we can as student nurses can maximise learning opportunities in the community setting.
