#WeNurses - Thursday 17th September 2020 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Exploring diverse careers in nursing

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

Nursing is a wide and diverse profession with many areas of specialism ... no two nursing roles are the same.  If we simply take the Adult nurse job profile (Prospects 2018) and consider it in regard to our own roles:

"Adult nurses care for adult patients who are suffering from a variety of health conditions, ranging from minor injuries and ailments, to acute and long-term illnesses and diseases. They support recovery by using care plans, carrying out care procedures and assessments, and evaluating and focusing on the needs of the patient rather than the illness or condition."

Does this describe what you do as a nurse? The chances are it doesn't !

Nurses work in a variety of different settings, from wards, clinics, call centres, community, offices, occupational health, technology, health assessing, public health, health promotion, education, sales etc. and we do a variety of different things from direct patient care to health promotion and from education to development of technology and innovation. So how do we encourage more nurses to explore the diversity of nursing ? How can we embrace non- traditional settings for nursing? How has this diversity changed the nursing profession?  And how does the revalidation process support nurses in alternative settings?

What area of nursing do you work in?

What alternative settings for nurses can you think of?

How does nurse education and training prepare nurses for working in non-traditional settings?

How does the revalidation process support nurses working in non-traditional settings?

How can nurses keep up a wide variety of clinical and non-clinical skills when working in one particular area or setting?

What does the future of nursing look like with regards to the sort of places nurses will be working?

RT @WeNurses: QUESTION 2 How does nurse education and training prepare nurses for working in non-traditional settings? #WeNurses https://…
@jnicolbham
17 September 2020 20:17
@WeNurses Sadly, I'd say not very well, there is still an emphasis on acute care. I'm leading a negotiated career development module this academic year and am really keen to get students to consider alternative work experience places #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
17 September 2020 20:17
@KatyWoo I can relate to the geeky need ;D #WeNurses
@AccessAbleMH
17 September 2020 20:17
@WeNurses I’m not sure if it depends on the country and establishment that you train in these days... also the academic staff that lead the programme of study. Finding placements is not easy! #WeNurses
@AccessAbleMH
17 September 2020 20:18
@WeNurses No very well generally #WeNurses
@alimully
17 September 2020 20:18
@WeNurses I think it teaches core skills that are transferable ie assessment, care planning, communication. It cant cover all the settings and that's why I love #twitter #wenurses constantly opens my eyes to possibilities for further development.
@AgencyNurse
17 September 2020 20:18
I think it's very university dependant ... some universities go out of their way to show students the diversity of nursing careers #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1306673040273666048
@Rachel_V_93
17 September 2020 20:18
@WeNurses I personally don't think that education and training can fully prepare a nurse for working. As they say as a nurse you are always learning. #WeNurses
@liavelvargas
17 September 2020 20:19
@AgencyNurse @WeNurses @TeamNUH @NUHNursing The role is great in that we provide both clinical and pastoral support to our learners in our Trust alongside the rest of the @NUHPractice_Ed team @NUHInstitute #wenurses
@Alison_R_62
17 September 2020 20:19
@WeNurses I don’t think it does. Many students I have interacted with think working in social care is for nurses who aren’t good enough for NHS #WeNurses
@angelajonesMSI
17 September 2020 20:19
@WeNurses #wenurses Sadly it doesn't! Termination of pregnancy doesn't sit as part of core pre-reg curricula, so our nurses are often learning a new specialism from scratch
@XMcVey
17 September 2020 20:19
@WeNurses Think it really depends on the lecturers and university faculty backgrounds and who they pull into modules. Felt I had lots of insight into acute care but not as much into education or research pathways #wenurses
@WeNurses

17 September 2020 20:21
@WeNurses It certainly gives you a taster of what’s out there. It’s important for individuals to seek out opportunities out there & create networks. Elective placements are great opportunities for exploring non-traditional settings #wenurses
@XMcVey

@WeNurses Nurse education is as good as the nurse educators. If nurse educators are drawn from a wide pool of experience, that will reflect in the education delivery. Here’s the Q then... what % of nurse educators are from “non-traditional settings”..? #wenurses

@WeNurses
17 September 2020 20:25
QUESTION 3 How does the revalidation process support nurses working in non-traditional settings? Is it something to worry about when taking on a non traditional nursing role ? #WeNurses https://t.co/M5lWBZXrTa
@Shaun_LDNurse
17 September 2020 20:25
@WeNurses Hmmmm... I’m not sure it does, not only is dominated by ward-based knowledge, skills, expertise - largely orientated around the needs of the NHS - much of the thinking about nurse education is seen through the medical-surgical lens. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
17 September 2020 20:25
@RunMoreEatMore @WeNurses I don;t know the answer to this question but i do know that social media is helping nurse educators to broaden their own knowledge in terms of what os possible, and to make connections ... the wise educators pass their on to their students #WeNurses

@AgencyNurse
17 September 2020 20:26
Yes it absolutely does ... speaking as a nurse in a non traditional role I have had no problems revalidating. But nurses do worry about it #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1306675551835488257

17 September 2020 20:31
@WeNurses We get asked this a lot! Particularly dual-qualified nurses and midwives. It's an anxiety that quickly passes, mainly due to the depth and breadth of the work they do with us, not to mention the opportunities for training! #wenurses

17 September 2020 20:33
@WeNurses I also think nurse training can’t (and probably shouldn’t even try) to equip you for what you will find in all areas. It’s a base to practice safely from, but whatever you do, you will need CPD and relevant specialist training #wenurses

@WeNurses This is an interesting question, I think there will always be some 'specialisation' of skill, and we shouldn't be worried about that. We don't expect an orthopaedic surgeon to be able to perform opthalmology surgery (a bit of an extreme example but you get the idea) #wenurses

@WeNurses I’m going to stick my neck out here: I simply don’t think eduction or practice is geared-up to produce and maintain a “core” of nursing. ... Nursing in UK is highly variable, with practice [and thus nursing] largely determined by the specific service a nurse works in. #WeNurses
