 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

There can be no doubt that nursing is a challenging role at times and as nurses we have all had days that where we feel overwhelmed with work or emotion. We spend so much time support and caring for our patients but who cares and supports nurses, especially during these Covid times?

The Kings Fund, Leadership for Engagement and Improvement in the NHS report talks about how engagement matters and state that “If staff do not feel engaged they can spiral down into burnout, which can leave them cynical, exhausted and depressed. But where staff are engaged studies across a range of sectors show performance rises.” The Kings Fund continue by stating there is “close relationship between staff experience and patient experience, arguing that ‘happy staff make happy patients'.” Therefore it is apparent that nurses who feel supported and have a positive experience give better care, however the challenge still remains .. how do we care and support nurses? And what are the challenges to doing this in these Covid times?

This #WeNurses discussion aims to explore the following:

  • How can we support a positive staff experience?
  • What goes wrong with staff experiences?
  • How can we support each other when things go wrong?
  • What are the extra challenges of supporting staff in these Covid times ?
  • What do organisations do to create a positive staff experience and what could they do more of?
  • What makes your work a positive place to be?
  • What have your colleagues done to make your work place a nice place to be lately?

Q2 Liam lurking from Eire, I think as Nurses we are expected to "nurse" and especially when things go wrong or have a difficult case or outcome, just expected to get over it. #debrief is so NB and can be as simple as a cuppa and a chat #WeNurses
@NRCUK
24 September 2020 20:20
@WeNurses I think experience is just one of those things that falls off the "nice to have list" when the pressure is on, and it has been on for a while. Feedback isn't gathered, or lives in a pit, and now a whole workforce is on its knees :( Many resented the clapping #WeNurses
@HeatherHenry4
24 September 2020 20:20
@WeNurses Understaffing, overworking, stress, poor leadership, impossible targets, lack of emotional intelligence in leaders, not listening to or valuing staff, lack of infrastructure, poor multiagency working .. #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
24 September 2020 20:20
How long do you have ?? Many thinks can go wrong but as an old manager of mine said when you have people who are dealing with other people you will always get problems ... it's how you tackle those problems that matters #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1309209755177627648
@AgencyNurse
24 September 2020 20:21
@HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses that list could go on Heather ! #WeNurses
@LeanneHPatrick
24 September 2020 20:21
@WeNurses I suppose staff experience is what benefits they get from their job. It's common to think of nurses as being there to do selfless work and whilst caring for people is inherently rewarding, feeling valued by the people you work with/for is just as important for many #WeNurses
@WeNurses

QUESTION 3 What are the extra challenges of supporting staff in Covid times ? #WeNurses https://t.co/b38Ccievxb
@LeanneHPatrick
24 September 2020 20:25
@WeNurses Staff feedback being valued, just as we value patient feedback, is a great way to listen and learn. You get an idea of what works and what doesn't and you can be more focused in making jmprovements, which helps retention. #WeNurses
@NicolaCroftRN
24 September 2020 20:25
@WeNurses Tiredness, burnout, not feeling reflected/valued, mental health not being looked after/not being seen as important, blame, unwillingness to teach/support junior (usually because they’re too knackered) Review your practice, have regular team meetings, listen to staff #wenurses
@LiamoJC
24 September 2020 20:25
@LeanneHPatrick @WeNurses Absolutely, you're meant to have a shield on at all times. Giving bad news never gets easy and you take a piece of the person's story with you. #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
24 September 2020 20:25
It seems simple ... so why aren't we doing it ?? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/LeanneHPatrick/status/1309212282744983552
@NRCUK
24 September 2020 20:26
@HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses Only had 75 years to get this sorted. Leadership: nursing is one of only workforces I've experienced where the most senior people have the least amount of qualifications to lead. How many nurses went to uni to study leadership, business studies, project management etc #wenurses
@LiamoJC
24 September 2020 20:27
@AgencyNurse Resilience is talked up so much people think it has to be a formal staged intervention. It can be as simple as an acknowledgement - That was crap (stronger expletive either) Are you OK and or take 5mins to catch your breath #wenurses
@NicolaCroftRN
24 September 2020 20:28
@WeNurses Not knowing what’s next, looking after patients but also be worried about own family, keeping safe, negative pressure on the NHS/nursing in general, hollow gestures from gvnt #wenurses
@HeatherHenry4
24 September 2020 20:28
@WeNurses I think we need all sorts of support networks: family, union, professional, team.. inspection is a blunt instrument. Whistle blowing still tricky. Occupational health-mustn’t forget them. Love a gd OH nurse. Kindness and compassion #wenurses
@AgencyNurse
24 September 2020 20:28
A nurse friend said to me early on in Covid that we are all living with a low level stress as nurses ... will I get it? will I pass it on to my family? are questions that are constantly with us .... we should not underestimate the impact of this #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1309212270107426822
@HeatherHenry4
24 September 2020 20:29

@LeanneHPatrick
24 September 2020 20:34
@AgencyNurse Well, it can seem quite a brave thing to do as a manager. Are they given the opportunities to meaningfully engage with feedback or are they scrutinised for what staff are saying? #WeNurses
@NRCUK
24 September 2020 20:34
@HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses And thats the point.... why??? Why are we trying to make nurses leaders, whilst they can't effect change, would naturally find a way to up skill, whilst ignore all the transferable leadership outside NHS in from industries that are lightyears ahead of the decrepit NHS? #wenurses

24 September 2020 20:38
@reboverend_RNc @HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses we all know that managing in most healthcare settings is about creating evidence for targets that add no value to orgs that don't matter in an environment that is less efficient than any other in all aspects of the service it provides #wenurses
@HeatherHenry4
24 September 2020 20:38

I'd like to see more healthier workplaces, nursing is tough & looking after yourself as a nurse is v. tough, shifts, stress, the physical and psychological demand all take their toll ... so orgs should think about nutrition, hydration, relaxation & exercise for nurses #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1309214785477775361

24 September 2020 20:41

24 September 2020 20:41
@NRCUK @HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses If you encourage an NHS model of leadership then who is determining what leadership should like? What we lack is providing leadership skills such as teamwork, questioning actions, making informed choices as development I’m all for looking outward- stops groupthink #WeNurses

24 September 2020 20:42
@HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses @WeStudentNurse it's interesting, does the chief nurse need to be a nurse when the Health Secretary has no health experience? #wenurses An insular workforce developing its own management just seems to strive to maintain the status quo, resulting in current poor staff experience #wenurses

@WeNurses Flexibility has been really helpful to me. Being able to work part time and to have slightly adjusted working hours for caring responsibilities, for example, is a demonstration of commitment to staff wellbeing by supporting them to work & balance other responsibilities. #WeNurses

Q5 Flexibility and a bit of human nature. Recognising that there needs to be balance between work and family. We are all tryinv to get that balance right and sometimes as a manager and staff, the balance doesn't tip the right way, but will always be another time #wenurses

24 September 2020 20:49
@reboverend_RNc @HeatherHenry4 @WeNurses @WeStudentNurse like you say, leadership and management are very different, the latter probably has more impact on staff experience "people leave managers not roles" is pretty common HR phrase, but possibly not mentioned in healthcare as its one big old fashion club :) #wenurses
