@lucy_uo
16 September 2020 20:08
@WeStudentNurse Pollution contributes to ill health. Through changes in climate which promote different bacteria and viruses. Through the way we infringe on the natural world making it more likely that things will cross over. Through living in crowded, unsanitary conditions. #WeStNs
@WeStudentNurse
16 September 2020 20:08
@lucy_uo And the health care beyond that, right out to contractors etc. Logistics, laundry and lunches all have a carbon footprint #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse Air pollutants which effect our lungs and hearts especially. Creating dirty water which can contain communicable illness. Killing plants and wildlife which sustain us (think of the bees and the importance of them for pollination). Harmful waste which could be picked up #WeStNs

2) What opportunities do health care professionals & students have to have influence/ impact in the climate movement? #WeStNs #WeGoGreener
@HermosuraJhing
16 September 2020 20:16
The impacts of climate change include warming temperatures, changes in precipitation and rising sea levels. These impacts threaten our health by affecting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the weather we experience. #WeStNs #WeGoGreener https://twitter.com/WeStudentNurse/status/1306308119299907585
@Rachel_A_
16 September 2020 20:16

@lucy_uo
16 September 2020 20:16
@StNurseLee @WeStudentNurse I've talked about the number of aprons when you have a barriered patient before on placement. Even if that was recyclable it would have to go in clinical waste. Maybe reusable would be better? #WeStNs

@lucy_uo
16 September 2020 20:19
@WeStudentNurse We can try and make a difference in our personal lives. In hospotals we should be asking do I need to do this? I was on a placement once when a patient was moved on a slide sheet and everyone wore gloves...they didn't even touch the patient! #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse The rise in temperatures means that plants produce more pollen for longer periods which increases the length of allergy season, increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can make plants grow more and cause more grass pollen which can cause allergies. #WeStNS

@StnKirstin Reduce > reuse > recycle. Have you heard that catch phrase before? #WeStNs
@lucy_uo
16 September 2020 20:26
@nikkilouh @WeStudentNurse Same. I don't tend to wear gloves when cleaning the beds either, unless it is obviously soiled, but those wipes can be nasty for your hands (should we even be using wipes...would a cloth and spray be better?) #WeStNs
@HeatherBaid
16 September 2020 20:27

@StnKirstin
16 September 2020 20:27
@WeStudentNurse Yes, it is very concerning. It's scary seeing the amount of masks and gloves in car parks at the shops etc. Also sad seeing how many animals are getting injured with the straps on the masks. #WeStNs
@SamSwabyPUNC
16 September 2020 20:28
@WeStudentNurse Here in Plymouth Active travel is being heavily invested in. With street canvassing and event promotions. Schools for example encouraging the walking bus, ride your bike to school days, walk for a week etc also providing bikability to promote cycling safety. #WeStNs
@HeatherBaid
16 September 2020 20:28
@WeStudentNurse 6) Use a ‘green lens’ to consider environmental sustainability when local protocols, policies and clinical guidelines are updated or when working on student assignments. #WeStNs #WeGoGreener

@HermosuraJhing
16 September 2020 20:30
@WeStudentNurse Nurses can encourage their practice sites to use safer energy sources. Educating people about how little things can make a huge difference. For example, reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. #WeStNs #WeGoGreener
@HeatherBaid
16 September 2020 20:30
@WeStudentNurse 8)Join the Green Nurse Network from @SusHealthcare - free online site for shared resources and practices. CSH also have green ward competition and their SusQI framework can be used is useful for quality improvement projects and assignments #WeStNs #WeGoGreener
@uoldancingnurse

@lucy_uo
16 September 2020 20:36
@WeStudentNurse Yes! It's so big that most people would see it, and some may have a better response if they understand the health implications. But it has to be done right, things like smaller carparks to encourage people not to drive can lead to congestion which makes it worse #WeStNs
@uoldancingnurse
16 September 2020 20:36
@WeStudentNurse I think if the NHS could prove that even with all it’s single use items it could promote sustainability and be environmentally conscious it would encourage other organisations to do the same #WeStNs
@WeStudentNurse

@SamSwabyPUNC @WeStudentNurse B'ham is just pretending. We have a tramline put in to take you walking distance across the city, the road works of which are causing chaos. @WeStudentNurse Wonder how that would go with disposal of drugs? I think always that part of the packet has gone in medicine bins when I've been on placement, presumed it was due to possible traces of drug ?????#WeStNs
@HeatherBaid
16 September 2020 20:43
For nursing students and teachers: use a 'sustainability lens' in nursing assignments (works for any topic!). Not just for adding in green elements, but financial and social considerations. Adds reflection, analysis, critical thinking too. #WeStNs #WeGoGreener
@AnthonyLongbone
16 September 2020 20:43
@WeStudentNurse It would get the thought processes going and create the conversation. You would begin to create a greener culture if you explore the issue as part of the learning, becomes an integral part of what we’re doing. #WeStNs #WeGoGreener
@SamSwabyPUNC
16 September 2020 20:44
@nikkilouh @WeStudentNurse Yes definitely the NHS is one of the most significant public sector contributer to climate change with nearly 20 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, their permits costing over 50 million, I think they are under pressure to < their carbon footprint and lead the way #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse I think so. If student nurses are aware then they are more likely to take it into placement and onto practice. @UniBham_Nursing we build our electives around the sustainable development goals, so we all know at least a little. #WeStNs

@StnKirstin

@SamSwabyPUNC @WeStudentNurse No Birmingham was built around the car. They literally pushed walkers underground. Then they realised it wasn't working so pedestrianised the city centre...turning the surroundings into a massive ring road. #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse One of the many joys of MH nursing for me is the opportunity to have a diverse range of conversations, there always the chance those conversations will turn into action. #WeStNs #WeGoGreener

@SamSwabyPUNC @WeStudentNurse But what do you expect from a city famous for its insane road #SpaghettiJunction #WeStNs
@StnKirstin
16 September 2020 20:55
@WeStudentNurse Yes! NHS is all about promoting good health and well-being and we now know that climate affects health, yet we don't hear much from the NHS regarding climate change and promoting sustainability etc. #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse Maybe something similar to encouraging patients to ask staff if they've washed their hands. Do you need to wear those gloves? And maybe patients could do things like change their own beds, or request not to have their beds and towels changed everyday #WeStNs
@SamSwabyPUNC
16 September 2020 20:59
@lucy_uo @WeStudentNurse That's good, less air pollutants from being pedestrianised whilst shopping, also less accidents #WeStNs
@StnKirstin
16 September 2020 20:59
@WeStudentNurse I know in certain area's you can get appointments etc emailed rather than printed out and sent, now I understand this would not suit everybody's need's but those who can could be encouraged to do this, this would reduce the amount of printing. #WeStNs
