#WeStNs - Tuesday 15th June 2021 8pm (GMT Standard Time) The Key to Successful Placements

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeStudentNurse using #WeStNs

Clinical placement is an essential component of the pre-registration nursing degree and allows the nursing student to translate their learning from theory into practice. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2018) specify, to gain entry onto the professional register, the nursing student must complete 2,300 clinical hours over a full-time three-year degree programme.

The first clinical placement can cause a lot of stress and anxiety for nursing students (Morely et al., 2015) and Alsharani, Cusack & Rasmussen (2018) explain that a negative experience during a nursing students first clinical placement may be a strong indicator that the nursing student will withdraw from the degree programme without completion.

There are various reasons nursing students feel anxious about their first clinical placement:

  • Lack of self confidence in their skills and abilities (Studen et al., 2015)
  • Thinking they will not be able to meet to expectations of clinical staff (Levitt-Jones etal., 2015; Studen et al., 2015)
  • Making mistakes that impact patient safety (Levitt-Jones et al., 2015)
  • First time working in a clinical environment (Christiansen and Bell, 2010).

First placements often present with various challenges (Morely et al, 2015) and therefore, the aim of this tweetchat is to discuss the strategies which will help first year nursing students prepare effectively.

As the success of a clinical placement does not rest solely with the nursing student but also with the Approved Education Institutions and the clinical staff, it is anticipated that a collaborative tweetchat between @WeStudentNurse and @WeNurses, will allow for the building of valuable resources to enhance the first-year students’confidence and their potential for success in clinical placements.

Discussion:

Focused themes include:

  1. What can nursing students do to prepare for starting their clinical placements? This can be academically or practically.
  2. How should the placement learning environment prepare for nursing students starting their clinical placements?
  3. What could/should nursing students do when thing go wrong? What role does the university and the clinical staff have when things go wrong?
  4. Working long days can be tough on our bodies physically, how can a nursing student take care of their bodies.Feel free to share food prep ideas for meal times too!
  5. Working in healthcare can have an impact on our emotional health, how can nursing students look after their emotional and mental health whilst on clinical placement?
  6. If you were to make a checklist of things for a student to pack for their placement, what would you include?

@WeStudentNurse Wipeable, smart, comfy (support socks help with this too). I got fake unloops when I started which were comfy enough, they're a bit worn out now so I got myself memory foam sketchers, which were more expensive but also more comfortable (but hot) #WeStNs

@WeStudentNurse Schedule ‘me’ time before/after shift such as reading/music. Days off organise something to look forward to. Mix up lengths of shifts-do you need to do the full 12.5 hours as a student, could you do 10 hour days instead? Make suggestions of what works for you.. #WeStNs
@paeds_Ellena
15 June 2021 20:40
@WeStudentNurse I wear compression tights and love a soak in the bath after a long shift! I also try to meal prep foods, I love my slow cooker as it is so easy - I always have some snacks in the bottom of my bag too so if I’m peckish or not managed a full break I can have something #WeStNs
