#WeNurses - Thursday 25th November 2021 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Discussing “Feed a nurse”

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

Last week Professor Alison Leary highlighted a tweet from Leeds Hospitals Charity:

The tweet puts a call out for donations to “feed a nurse” on Christmas Day and, as the Twitter thread shows, highlights a whole heap of topics: from the dignity of nurses to pay and conditions.

This #WeNurses Tweetchat aims to explore these issues in more depth and what support nurses need, especially during the busy Christmas period.

QUESTION 1 What are your first thoughts on an organisation asking for donations to buy a Christmas meal for a nurse? #WeNurses https://t.co/25NDpwEzha
@NRCUK
25 November 2021 20:37
@WeNurses a bit of a double edged sword I think - but didn't sound particularly well thought through to me @alisonleary1 was right to highlight it I think #WeNurses

@ElenaH_PUNC21 @WeNurses It is interesting as I agree, but fascinating that a trust should highlight this, or did they not see that that's the implication, or did they and it was a political move? #WeNurses

It doesn't sit right with me ..... for so many reasons .... why isn't the organisation funding this? surely there was a better way? what about our professional dignity ? It seems like initially it was well meaning but not sure that it's helpful for us as a profession #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1463969500475367425

QUESTION 2 What are your feelings about the 'feed a nurse' campaign .... do you feel that it's ok for the organisation to run this campaign ? Is it ok for nurses to be used in this way? #WeNurses https://t.co/aEppF9DmfC

QUESTION 3 How does the 'feed a nurse' campaign, and others like it, it affect how people perceive nursing? #WeNurses https://t.co/geixJOItJm
@receivingconsnt
25 November 2021 21:05
@WeNurses Yes I wonder if more of a ‘contribute towards our fund to ensure all staff working in Christmas Day get the opportunity to have Christmas Dinner on us’ type message would be better. Is it the sentiment or the tag line that’s the problem? ?? #WeNurses

@receivingconsnt @WeNurses I don't know - part of working over Christmas is the camaraderie ... bringing in food for everyone, sharing what we all have .... this does feel like a step too far for me #WeNurses

@WeNurses Sorry late to this chat, absolutely not. Too many nurses struggle to make ends meet because they are not paid enough, this degrades them and normalises it #wenurses
@NRCUK
25 November 2021 21:10
@receivingconsnt @WeNurses ensuring they have the time to eat would probably be a better place to start - not so catchy for the public though? #wenurses

QUESTION 4 What wider issues does the 'feed a nurse' campaign, and others like it, highlight? #WeNurses https://t.co/KOgRJDBcXN
@edfreshwater
25 November 2021 21:15
@WeNurses @COSMakin @PUNCCharis20 We're always told that the only way to recruit to executives is to pay them huge salaries and bonuses and expenses and great working conditions. Funny how that's not true for nurses... or anyone else who isn't already rich... No, this is a symptom of elitism. #wenurses
@WeNurses

@WeNurses A lack of shame in asking for these things for starters #WeNurses Just give the staff free Christmas food if it’s seen as a desirable thing. Use charitable funds if need be but maybe don’t use poorly thought through slogans? And maybe don’t put it on social media ??

@alisonleary1 @ProfJuneG @LeanneHPatrick @caspertown42 @robmarki do you think the public see this, is it negatively impactful, or is it only something that is visible within the workforce? #wenurses
@SusanMcgavock
25 November 2021 21:21
@WeNurses A reluctance to see nurses as qualified professionals, a one dimensional view of the profession, a huge gap in policy #Wenurses
@NRCUK
25 November 2021 21:21
@receivingconsnt @WeNurses maybe sell some art? I've never quite got the whole trust art collection thing really, at all??? #WeNurses

QUESTION 5 How can / should organisations support nurses over the Christmas period ? #WeNurses https://t.co/ndTCb04dxM
@ElenaH_PUNC21
25 November 2021 21:25
@WeNurses I think it shows the lack of thought that those in management positions have towards healthcare staff in general. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
25 November 2021 21:28
Be compassionate, be person centred towards staff, promote a community feel, get senior staff to pop in and be part of the team and do everything in your power to ensure that those who are working get their breaks #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1463982082154283016
@receivingconsnt
25 November 2021 21:28
@WeNurses Fair off duty, listening to and acting on concerns, visibility of senior staff. We used to always get free taxi on Christmas day and new year to work and back (as standard not as a perk!) #WeNurses
@NRCUK
25 November 2021 21:29
@receivingconsnt @WeNurses It's a big thing and often runs into millions of pounds per trust. Other than land and buildings that fall apart and devalue, probably not much else #wenurses
