Welcome to tweetchat 4 of 5 covering a variety of topics exploring how we help our internationally recruited nurses to #StayAndThrive

The #StayAndThrive project is an opportunity for us to understand contributing factors impacting wellbeing, clinical effectiveness, and a sense of belonging both at home and at work. Following on from understanding these factors we'll look to discuss how we as individuals and organisations can improve the short and long-term living and working conditions to help our international nurses #StayAndThrive

Exploring Principles/Practices To Help International Nurses

There are already an estimated 68,501internationally educated nurses caring in the UK and we extend a huge thank you to all of them!

The NHS is one of the largest and most recognised healthcare systems in the world. We know that this is one of the motivating factors for migration to the UK, and with this is there an added pressure of working in such a high-profile organisation

Internationally educated colleagues arriving in the UK are highly skilled professionals, many of whom have years of experience and have worked in senior positions. In order for their skills and experience to be recognised in the UK, they are asked to sit an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) prior to receiving their UK professional registration number and commencing as a band 5 staff nurse. Do we understand how this might impact confidence, well-being, and a sense of belonging? What do we do to ensure that the wider workforce appreciates the skills and experience internationally educated colleagues bring?

There are a huge amount of differences, both in terms of clinical practice and healthcare provision between the UK and countries internationally educated colleagues to emigrate from. Many different countries use different models of nursing. In the UK we use a nurse-led model of care, meaning a holistic approach to treating patients, taking into account both their physical and emotional needs. We not only treat visible symptoms but also encourage health promotion in other areas. In contrast, a medical-led model of care utilises a diagnostic approach, focusing on cause and effect, symptom management and returning people back to their prior level of health. These differences mean that not only are nurses having to integrate into the culture of the UK, but they also have to integrate into the culture of the NHS, peer-peer relationships as well as nurse-patient relationships.

In this #StayAndThrive chat, we are looking to explore the principles and practices of nursing in the UK and how we can support internationally educated colleagues prepare for this.

Questions we'll be asking during the chat:

  • How can we support international nurses to adopt the UK nursing model?
  • What training can we provide for international nurses to give them the confidence to embrace UK model?
  • How can we ensure that the wider workforce recognise international nurses may not be confident or comfortable employing the UK nurse-led model?
  • How can we prevent assimilation when asking nurses to adapt to the UK model of nursing?
  • How can we learn from alternative ways of doing things from our internationally educated colleagues, to improve our own ways of working and patient experience?
  • How can we promote the skillset of international nurses to existing staff, whilst ensuring we learn from their experiences and previous ways of working to better patient care in the UK?
  • How can we ensure the wider workforce recognises and values the skills and experience our international colleagues bring?
  • How do we ensure that our International colleagues have confidence and recognise the pathways for progression and development within our UK healthcare model?

@WeNurses Don’t forget to teach that resilience and self motivation because it’s not always easy and a lot of hard work is under that success. It’s about enjoying the journey and life long learning. Go for that interview but if not successful it’s ok. Don’t give up ?? #stayandthrive https://t.co/D1m444uCvw

@Jenny74112735 @AgencyNurse @WeNurses I feel department's should have a link nurse for this. We do it for students, so why not for them. It wouldn't take a lot of work to sort out & would likely make for a better experience & support network. You know what... I might put this forwards to management! #StayAndThrive
