#StayAndThrive - Thursday 21st April 2022 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Exploring Principles/Practices To Help International Nurses

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #StayAndThrive

Welcome to tweetchat 4 of 5 covering a variety of topics exploring how we help our internationally recruited nurses to #StayAndThrive

The #StayAndThrive project is an opportunity for us to understand contributing factors impacting wellbeing, clinical effectiveness, and a sense of belonging both at home and at work. Following on from understanding these factors we'll look to discuss how we as individuals and organisations can improve the short and long-term living and working conditions to help our international nurses #StayAndThrive

You can see all 5 of the tweetchats listed here.

Exploring Principles/Practices To Help International Nurses

There are already an estimated 68,501internationally educated nurses caring in the UK and we extend a huge thank you to all of them!

The NHS is one of the largest and most recognised healthcare systems in the world. We know that this is one of the motivating factors for migration to the UK, and with this is there an added pressure of working in such a high-profile organisation

Internationally educated colleagues arriving in the UK are highly skilled professionals, many of whom have years of experience and have worked in senior positions. In order for their skills and experience to be recognised in the UK, they are asked to sit an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) prior to receiving their UK professional registration number and commencing as a band 5 staff nurse. Do we understand how this might impact confidence, well-being, and a sense of belonging? What do we do to ensure that the wider workforce appreciates the skills and experience internationally educated colleagues bring?

There are a huge amount of differences, both in terms of clinical practice and healthcare provision between the UK and countries internationally educated colleagues to emigrate from. Many different countries use different models of nursing. In the UK we use a nurse-led model of care, meaning a holistic approach to treating patients, taking into account both their physical and emotional needs. We not only treat visible symptoms but also encourage health promotion in other areas. In contrast, a medical-led model of care utilises a diagnostic approach, focusing on cause and effect, symptom management and returning people back to their prior level of health. These differences mean that not only are nurses having to integrate into the culture of the UK, but they also have to integrate into the culture of the NHS, peer-peer relationships as well as nurse-patient relationships.

In this #StayAndThrive chat, we are looking to explore the principles and practices of nursing in the UK and how we can support internationally educated colleagues prepare for this.

Questions we'll be asking during the chat:

  • How can we support international nurses to adopt the UK nursing model?
  • What training can we provide for international nurses to give them the confidence to embrace UK model?
  • How can we ensure that the wider workforce recognise international nurses may not be confident or comfortable employing the UK nurse-led model?
  • How can we prevent assimilation when asking nurses to adapt to the UK model of nursing?
  • How can we learn from alternative ways of doing things from our internationally educated colleagues, to improve our own ways of working and patient experience?
  • How can we promote the skillset of international nurses to existing staff, whilst ensuring we learn from their experiences and previous ways of working to better patient care in the UK?
  • How can we ensure the wider workforce recognises and values the skills and experience our international colleagues bring?
  • How do we ensure that our International colleagues have confidence and recognise the pathways for progression and development within our UK healthcare model?

@WeNurses First find out how their knowledge and training differs from the uk. Then discuss with them about how to put support in place (preceptors, learning packages etc). It has to be a mutual equal discussion. #StayAndThrive
@RNChristinaH
21 April 2022 20:42
@WeNurses Offer the same opportunities as newly qualified nurses - preceptorship, supernumerary time, adhoc teaching, cpd training. Give a nurse the tools to be equipped with. often many await courses for venepuncture, meds awareness, IV training. Its a hinderence for them #StayAndThrive
@WeNurses
21 April 2022 20:43
And... QUESTION 3 "How can we ensure that the wider workforce recognise international nurses may not be confident or comfortable employing the UK nurse-led model?" Don't forget #StayAndThrive too :) https://t.co/toEfyaMp5I
@EdCoxNHS
21 April 2022 20:43
This totally goes back to the power of listening and hearing the voice of international nurses, encouraging them to share ideas and views on the UK model. Nursing is a global profession and we should embrace a global approach to practice (in my opinion). #StayAndThrive https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1517226161234800640

@Kiml71
21 April 2022 20:43
@WeNurses I don’t think we can deliver a 1 size fits all training, there must be such a difference in previous experience & competence just as there is across UK trained nurses. Personalised preceptorships with properly prepared preceptors is maybe where training is needed? #stayandthrive

21 April 2022 20:44
@WeNurses In order to understand what we must do to help build confidence, we must learn from those who have come before and listen to their lived experience to truly understand what helped build their confidence, and what could have made it even better for them #StayAndThrive.

@publicenema2 Hi, thats a big question! #StayAndThrive
@shaniepoo2000
21 April 2022 20:45
@RNChristinaH @WeNurses The problem with extended supernumerary time is that a lot of Trusts don't have the available staffing to let this happen. Some UK newly qualified nurses don't even get a month before being left go on the ward. #StayAndThrive
@NurseCharr
21 April 2022 20:45
@WeNurses We need to understand their model, and how that aligns to the UK model, and how we can learn and incorporate practices for the best outcomes for our patients. Without true recognition, we are setting IENs up to fail. #StayAndThrive
@LOkoroezi
21 April 2022 20:45
@WeNurses In my role supporting the education and development of international nurses in my Trust, I have severally come across IENs struggle with UK Nursing model when they start initially such as the levels of Nursing care e.g washing patients as a nurse or HCA role #StayAndThrive
@Nyrs_Emma
21 April 2022 20:45
@WeNurses I guess it's important to see what they are expert in and what training they feel they need. It may be the need to become familiar with local policies and relevant laws rather than training in specific nursing practices? ?? #StayAndThrive

21 April 2022 20:47
@WeNurses It's about being relatable. We all started somewhere. Providing psychological safety on arrival to say it will take time, it will be hard but admire the courage to transition into nursing in the UK #StayAndThrive
