#WeCNs - Tuesday 28th June 2022 8pm (GMT Standard Time) Advanced Practice in Community Nursing

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeCommNurses using #WeCNs

The NHS Long Term Plan (NHS England, 2019) highlights how advanced clinical practice is central to helping transform service delivery and better meet local health needs by providing enhanced capacity, capability, productivity and efficiency within multi-professional teams.

Advance Practice can be further explored via Health Education England's Multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice in England. All health and care professionals working at the level of advanced clinical practice should have developed their skills and knowledge to the standard outlined in the framework; the capabilities are common across this level of practice enabling standardisation. The four pillars that underpin this practice are:

1. Clinical Practice
2. Leadership and Management
3. Education
4. Research

Advanced practice nursing (APN) roles have developed partly to address demand and workforce issues. In community care settings and general practice, an advanced nursing practitioner is generally understood to mean a nurse who has undertaken additional education and training in clinical assessment, including history-taking and physical examination, clinical reasoning and independent prescribing, so they can safely manage patients presenting with undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions.

This tweetchat aims to explore what advanced practice in community nursing is, the key principles of advanced practice and how, as nurses, we can ensure that the community nurses are recognised for their advanced skill set.

We'll be exploring Advance Practice via the following questions:

  • What does advanced practice mean to you?
  • What skills do you feel are required to practice at an advanced level in the community?
  • What are the key messages for community nurses around advanced practice?
  • What is the impact of advanced practice to patients, families and the NHS/care as a whole?
  • Are you able to deliver all four pillars of advanced practice in your role?
  • What do community advanced practitioners need to be able to practice within all four pillars?

This chat will be guest hosted by NHSE Community Nurse Fellows:

Dr Neesha Oozageer PhD RN DN QN - Tweeting as @Ne55ao

Kerry Bareham RN - Tweeting as @Kerry_Bareham

@WeCommNurses @She_Cam1 @fitztrace @jobobertson @Pearson1Nina @FallsLuton I would say yes but need many, many more. It would be fab if more nurses and other practitioners who currently work in out-patients and other hospital settings could spend some time supporting the out of hospital agenda.
