AI - optimist or pessimist?

Artificial Intelligence or AI can be described as “the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behaviour.”(Wikipedia 2016)

It all sounds very futuristic however AI is already being used in healthcare:

A team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York is training an artificial intelligence to find similarities between cases that human doctors might miss. The software combs through 100 million sentences taken from clinical notes about people with cancer.” (NewScientist 2016)

Looking to the future there is much speculation on the role of AI in health, this article in H & N H explore 12 ways in which AI will transform healthcare.

This WeNurses discussion in collaboration with Health Education England’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Programme Team aims to explore what AI is and what the potential is for AI in healthcare?

What does AI mean for the future of healthcare? We will also be exploring our thoughts and attitudes towards AI - are you optimistic that robotic doctors will be saving our lives? Or do you take a more pessimistic view in that AI could never replace the knowledge and experience of healthcare professionals?

This discussion will include contributions from:

Alan Ryan (@NHSAlanRyan) TEL Lead and e-LfH National Programme Director – Health Education England,

Emma Scales (@emmascales2810 ) Assistant Programme Manager TEL Programme – Health Education England,

Richard Price (@RichardPriceUK) Learning Technologist and Project Manager TEL Programme– Health Education England,

Susan Kennedy (@AdaPeck) Educationalist and Project Manager TEL Programme - Health Education England.

Dr Kate Cuthbert (@cuthbert_kate) Academic Lead for Health and Social Care at the Higher Education Academy,

Martin Sinclair

(

@martin_sinclair

) Technical Lead for e-Learning for Healthcare Health Education England.

In previous roles with the KSS Deanery and East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, Susan has had extensive experience in medical and healthcare education and training. Susan’s research has included work on the educational use of emergent mobile technologies in clinical settings.

 Chat Summary

When I think of artificial intelligence (AI) I immediately think of the film AI and a future with human like robots or even The Matrix where robots that can think for themselves take over the world! However I feel that the reality is far less apocalyptic, though has the potential to be equally dramatic! This WeNurses discussion explored the the use and the potential for AI in healthcare and in health education and there were some very interesting tweets shared and points raised:

The discussion kicked off by asking people what AI meant to them:

There was lots of discussion around the potential of AI:

Data was also a key theme:

There was also many Tweets shared around care:

Some final thoughts were shared:

My own final thoughts refer back to a Twitter conversation I had earlier in the day with @betabetic which, for me, really brought the potential of AI in healthcare to life:

Of course these are just my reflections ... please feel free to add your own below.....
