Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

This chat is guest hosted by @NHSE_TEL

With simulation-based education in healthcare growing in both popularity and usage, particularly in relation to patient-safety, Health Education England (HEE) has recognised the need for a consistent approach that will enable equity of access, provide value for money and ensure delivery of best practice. A national strategy is therefore being developed that will be locally led and delivered.  The drivers for the strategy are based on the Department of Health TEL wheel (see graphic below):

In this #WeNurses chat, we will explore with you the opportunities for simulation in nursing and midwifery, its implications for ever-increasingly inter-disciplinary, multi-professional teams, and what impact you feel this will have on your training moving forward.

As part of our ongoing work, we want to learn about your experiences within simulation, particularly relating to ease of access, in order to ensure that everyone has a share of voice in the development of the strategy.

Working in a care home we don't often get the chance for any education via simulation ... but recently attended a very good fire evacuation practice where we evacuated eachother .... very low tech but very worthwhile #WeNurses
@dellapowell1
19 December 2017 20:07
@WeNurses Ive no experience of using SBE.I work in community.Have seen the wonderful @USW_ClinSimCent @USWnurs_mid &ive heard great things???? #WeNurses

@WeNurses At the ambulance service, Resusci Annie is well used, at @HEE_TEL we've got some pretty exciting kit planned to help with simulated education #WeNurses. I think the future will see less physical kit and more AR/VR simulation.
@real_sukie
19 December 2017 20:08
#WeNurses. Very interested to hear what nurses have to say about SBE as this will help shape the strategy
@NHSE_TEL
19 December 2017 20:08
@AgencyNurse I think that's a really good point to make that simulation doesn't have to be high tech to be worthwhile. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
19 December 2017 20:09
Though found this article very interesting on how simulation is a technique not a technology #WeNurses https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15465951
@dellapowell1
19 December 2017 20:09
@AgencyNurse That reminds me...we used SBE in aeromedical training when I was in RAF. That really was invaluable #WeNurses
@NHSE_TEL
19 December 2017 20:09
@dellapowell1 @WeNurses @USW_ClinSimCent @USWnurs_mid Is that because you don't have the opportunity to use SBE due to your setting? #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
19 December 2017 20:10
Yes indeed ... i think if people join in and take part the tech (or lack of) is irrelevant .. its about the learning experience #WeNurses https://twitter.com/HEE_TEL/status/943211461953884161
@AgencyNurse

@jo_swidenbank
19 December 2017 20:11
@WeNurses We have excellent simulation arms/torsos for practicing venepuncture, cannulation and accessing central venous ports. I’m not sure about areas outside of haematology though. #WeNurses

@RichardPriceUK
19 December 2017 20:13
@HEE_TEL @AgencyNurse Yes, definitely low-tech sim is important. Do nurses still practice injections on oranges? Or, sutures on bananas? #WeNurses????
@WeCommNurses
19 December 2017 20:13

@HEE_TEL In a trust I have only ever seen Annie dolls, fake arms and a mock up of a ward as part of resus training. From a non-clinical background it all looks very real. #wenurses
@dellapowell1

@jo_swidenbank
19 December 2017 20:15
@WeNurses It’s really great to be able to practice these skills before moving on to a patient - especially as port access can be very nerve-wracking the first time you do it! We teach parents to access their children’s ports with them too. #WeNurses
@dellapowell1
19 December 2017 20:15
@real_sukie @WeNurses @USW_ClinSimCent @USWnurs_mid Totally.it would be invaluable.Totally different environment and SBE wld prep students imo #wenurses
@RichardPriceUK
19 December 2017 20:16
@dellapowell1 @HEE_TEL @AgencyNurse Exciting! A lot of sim has come out of the aviation industry/RAF. I came across this Sim kit from the RAF recently with @real_sukie https://www.inzpire.com/2017/04/introducing-ghost/ #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
19 December 2017 20:16

19 December 2017 20:16
@WeNurses That is my biggest challenge with Nurses as a facilitator #wenurses
@jo_swidenbank
19 December 2017 20:16
@HEE_TEL @WeNurses Our LED nurse practitioner has the arms, so we would need to book time in with him. Usually you would just see them on study days. The torso is ours though, and it stays in our haemophilia centre. #WeNurses
@WeNurses
19 December 2017 20:17

What is most important? Physical, sociological or psychological reality? #wenurses
@RunnerNursePhil
19 December 2017 20:17
@WeNurses There is pressure 365 days a year but managers will always pull Nurses and other staff back to wards. Miss that #patientsafety is compromised by lack of knowledge as well as staffing #wenurses
@NHSE_TEL
19 December 2017 20:18
@dellapowell1 @real_sukie @WeNurses @USW_ClinSimCent @USWnurs_mid Is the reason it's not happening because "it never has" or are there other reasons? #WeNurses

19 December 2017 20:18

RT @WeDistrictNurse: An interesting question ... what do people think ? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/real_sukie/status/943212400936972288
@jo_swidenbank
19 December 2017 20:19
@HEE_TEL @WeNurses Yep! Port access using aseptic technique seems really daunting at first, but using the simulation allows them to practice in a safe and supported way. #WeNurses
@AgencyNurse
19 December 2017 20:19
@SP_Duckworth (back in the day) this used to happen ... i have a feeling the reality these days is that staffing is too tight to let this happen #WeNurses
@eleni_keogh
19 December 2017 20:20
@RichardPriceUK @dellapowell1 @HEE_TEL @AgencyNurse @real_sukie I wonder why that is? Aviation/RAF SIM in some respects is very advanced. Is it down to investment? perhaps more buy-in? #wenurses
@jo_swidenbank
19 December 2017 20:21
@real_sukie @WeNurses The torso lives in our haemophilia centre, so we always offer it to parents when their child has a port put in for treatment. Not all take up the offer, but it’s always there :) #WeNurses

@dellapowell1
19 December 2017 20:23
@eleni_keogh @RichardPriceUK @HEE_TEL @AgencyNurse @real_sukie think its a case of having to pass SBE 2B deemed‘safe’before doing real thing. Should this happen in clinical situations too?#WeNurses

19 December 2017 20:25
@dellapowell1 @eleni_keogh @HEE_TEL @AgencyNurse @real_sukie It would be good if sim could play a role in ensuring an individual is deemed 'safe' to practice. Maybe a little like the driving test? Or in the case of the RAF, the instructor signing-off the pilot in the simulator first? #WeNurses
@RunnerNursePhil
19 December 2017 20:26

@wlasinclair mmm they weren't really very realistic when we did it ... real people don't roll off the table or smell citrussy ;D #WeNurses
@RunnerNursePhil
19 December 2017 20:28
@WeNurses Yes to a certain extent but probably more an ignorance of the role of sim and a dislike of the ‘role play’ image that sim has. I ask all my participants to play their role, not anything else #wenurses
@wlasinclair
19 December 2017 20:28
@AgencyNurse Just popped on to twitter and it looks like an interesting chat going on...I'll just catch up! #wenurses

@WeNurses On my course I loved simulation where we peer-reviewed each other either during simulation or by having been recorded & watching it back... I think that experience could be enhanced as MDT w other students e.g midwifery, med students, physio students etc #WeNurses
