Health Education England’s (HEE) Reducing Pre-registration Attrition and Improving Retention (RePAIR) project was established to address the need to reduce attrition on healthcare training programmes. It considers the four fields of nursing, midwifery and therapeutic radiography, and aims to gain a deeper understanding of the student’s journey from recruitment to early clinical career. Although the roles of nurses, AHPs and midwives are wide and diverse, the steps that they take towards being confident and competent practitioners are very similar. The RePAIR project has emphasised the shared responsibility for healthcare student retention whereby the commitment required from Universities, Service Provider Organisations, and students themselves have an impact on the student experience and therefore student retention.

The project has outlined four stages across the student journey:

  • Pre-course enrolment
  • During their degree
  • The period after completing a course- referred to within RePAIR as the ‘flaky bridge’
  • The early clinical career

Through a programme of extensive engagement, the project has focussed on a range of recommended interventions to support the learning experience with a view to improving retention. A network of sixteen case study sites has been established across the country to explore the value and impact of these interventions.  Four interventions emerged as the most popular with preceptorship being highlighted as a key support framework for the development of confident and competent professionals. This #WeMDT discussion will be exploring the preceptorship element of these interventions and will be asking the following questions:

  1. What is the one most important feature of an effective programme of support from the final year of a degree to becoming a newly qualified professional?
  2. How can those developing these programmes ensure there is a smooth transition from degree to preceptorship (or similar programme of support post-qualifying)?
  3. How can a preceptorship programme (or similar) support the development of confident and competent newly qualified staff?
  4. How can a preceptorship programme (or similar) have a positive impact on retention?
  5. What is the best way of receiving information relating to a preceptorship programme (or similar)?
  6. What would you consider to be ‘best practice’ when looking at preceptorship programmes (or similar)?
