#WeNurses - Thursday 22nd July 2021 8pm (GMT Standard Time) #NursesActive - Let’s do this!

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

The case for increasing physical activity among the general population and the health and care workforce has never been more compelling, for improving both physical and mental health. However, achieving this is more complex, and for many people the reality of knowing how and where to start, and fitting regular exercise into busy work and home lives, can be challenging.

This August WeActiveChallenge and #NursesActive is back! In case you have been hiding under a rock and not heard about #NursesActive here is the lowdown ….

Every August the WeCommunities have come together in friendly competition to

  • raise the profile of the importance of peer support and role modelling in physical activity
  • practice what we teach/preach as health and care staff
  • motivate, inspire and create a sense of community.

So ahead of August 1st and #NursesActive getting into full swing we are holding this tweetchat to explore the following:

  • What are the benefits of increasing physical activity?
  • What should we be aiming for to achieve these benefits– in terms of recommended types of exercise, frequency and intensity?
  • What are the barriers to achieving these recommended levels of physical activity as nurses?
  • What can we do as nurses to support ourselves and our colleagues to be more active?
  • What motivates you to be more active ?
  • What will you be doing to get a little more active in August for #NursesActive?

@PhilBallRN @WeNurses great point Philip - it seems counter-intuitive but being a little active after a long day gives you a real boost #WeNurses
@youvegotanthony
22 July 2021 20:13
@AgencyNurse @lireland197 @WeNurses @yogawithadriene It has more of a focus on meditation than movement. Great in the evening and can really help relaxation #WeNurses

@WeNurses I think, dare I say it, it's important for health promotion if we "walk the walk" & "talk the talk". We have an expectation, and rightly so, from the @nmcnews to be promoting health at every opportunity, but perhaps our own health makes patients question our advice #WeNurses

Well i'm sure somewhere there are recommendations .... 30 mins 3 x a week ?? However i do sometimes struggle with that so get by with some active travel, and 10 min bursts (yoga or hiit) and lunchtime walks #WeNurses https://twitter.com/WeNurses/status/1418288522268717061

@WeNurses I think it's about not setting the goals too high. Short 15 minute sessions. Going for a walk around your street a couple of times , especially when you're busy at work. If you can commit to an early morning if you know you're going to be too busy later, or vice versa #WeNurses

@WeNurses @nmcnews More importantly its vital for our own health and longevity. There are that many factors impacting on our health from our career choice, such as shift work, lack of access to whole, nutritional food on shift, stress, and so on, so keeping fit is key to well-being #WeNurses

@WeNurses I think making physical exercise part of something we enjoy is key. For some, the gym is a chore, not to mention costly. Free exercise, doing something we enjoy, such as gardening, benefits overall health (https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/health-and-wellbeing/articles/why-gardening-makes-us-feel-better) or maybe hillwalking, climbing... #WeNurses

22 July 2021 20:30
@WeNurses Definitely time. But we can get caught up in wrongful prioritising. Important we recognise the importance in self care. Not tending to our own needs can impact on our ability to care for others. Time can be subjective, don't commit to the wrong things. #WeNurses
