#WeNurses - Thursday 24th November 2022 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Nurses identifying and supporting unpaid carers

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

Carers Rights Day is an annual event to focus on UnpaidCarers of all ages and:

  • ensure carers are aware of their rights
  • let carers know where to get help and support
  • raise awareness of the needs of carers

“Caring Costs” in so many ways. It could be the cost to unpaid carers’ wellbeing and ability to access health services. Sometimes it’s the financial costs associated with looking after someone – or the effects on carers’ employment options. Taking care of someone may cost carers the quality of their relationships, through not being able to take time out to spend with friends and family or through changes to the relationship with those they care for. And the current cost of living crisis is being felt even more acutely by carers throughout the UK. Carers UK 2022

“ …..I only eat one meal a day now….” Young Adult Carer

Nurses and their colleagues play an invaluable role in identifying, signposting, and supporting unpaid carers whether in the community, hospital ward, outpatient clinic, GP practice…….   Many unpaid carers and young carers don’t identify themselves as unpaid carers andare therefore not accessing their right to a Carer Assessment and are unaware of local carer support services.

NHSE is committed to supporting unpaid carers  fulfilling the ambitions of the NHS Long TermPlan

NHSLong Term Plan » Our long term commitment to carers

Nurses themselves may also be an unpaid carer juggling their caring responsibilities with their job. 400,000 NHS England employees reported having an unpaid caring role for a relative or friend, and 55.3% said they were satisfied or very satisfied with opportunities for flexible working pattern.

Carers UK 2021

We’ll be exploring the following questions during the tweet chat:

  • How do you identify unpaid carers in your workplace?
  • What do you do if you identify someone as or supported by an unpaid carer?
  • How and when do you involve unpaid carers in the care and discharge of their loved one?
  • Does your workplace support staff who are unpaid carers? If so, what does it do?
  • How can we continue to raise awareness across the nursing profession of the needs and value of unpaid carers?

We hope you can join us to network and share good practice!

Guest Host

@WeNurses These carers support many people to live independently at home, you might never meet them but if you do its normally due to a breakdown in circumstances. Listen to them as they know your patient better than anyone especially if there is a cognitive impairment #WeNurses

@WeNurses #WeNurses A4 sadly it’s not consistent the #NHS should have clear guidance inc policy for all trusts to follow and be open about it. Good employers get better response and staff recruitment if it’s consistent https://twitter.com/wenurses/status/1595882447669006339
