#WeNurses - Thursday 26th January 2023 8:30pm (GMT Standard Time) Nurse Strikes - Beyond Pay

If you haven't joined in a tweet chat before it's very simple.    Here's a guide

 Chat Details

Hosted by WeNurses using #WeNurses

When somebody is off sick at work, or on holiday, those remaining may pick up the slack, or, those relying on the work may need to wait a while if that work can't be done by others, it is how everyone works, sometimes things get delayed, maybe some profit is lost, nobody dies, right?

As we and hopefully the general public know by now, you need enough nurses to deliver the amount of care needed at the quality we have worked towards for many decades in the NHS, if you drop below the threshold then those remaining have to work harder, because if you don't, people do die; that's the fundamental difference in our "line of work".

But, a sustained drop in nursing numbers or an increase in demand means those remaining are "picking up the slack" for days and months and now years on end. Part of the RCN's patient safety argument for nurses' increased pay is to stop those leaving nursing for the same money, or sometimes less and if they are very lucky more money, where they aren't picking up any slack and having a much better quality of work-life balance.

It has taken The RCN to verbalise the lack of nurses as a safety-impacting issue, this wasn't news to nurses, employers or governments yet it seemed to have remained a "dirty secret" that was referenced internally by many and some spoke out, are we still living in whistleblowing territory, or is there confusion over NMC codes for nurses in terms of speaking up when patients are at risk, why did it take a union to get the conversation out in the open... We digress.

We asked in a poll if recording habits had changed now it is out in the open that staffing numbers are related to safety and quality, here are the results:

The results show a change in behavior...

This got us wondering, what other changes can be made in nursing, beyond pay, that we all know need changing, that having a national media and internal focus on nurses' work-life balance could these times of industrial action attention afford us?

If you've found your voice through industrial action to drive up safety, quality, work-life balance and be able to afford to live too, what else can use this time of focus to achieve?

We'll be exploring this topic through the following questions on the chat:

•  How has the focus on the needs of nurses made you feel over the build-up to and during the current industrial action?

*  How can that feeling help you make positive changes where you work or in the way you work?

•  Other than working conditions and pay, what else is known but has remained taboo to discuss openly for too long?

*  How can we use the strength shown on picket lines and our combined needs to improve other aspects of nursing?

*  How do you think we should capitalise on the current nursing focus and how would you achieve it?

You can use this tweetchat for participatory CPD / Revalidation via #MyWe, here's a how-to guide, and the login link to #MyWe

26 January 2023 20:42
@WeNurses I think the press like to focus on stories about nurses living in poverty for clicks & sales, which is tough for the struggling public to read. So it's been great to hear nurses in media talking about how pay relates to retention & valuing nursing skills/experience. #WeNurses

Interesting, why did we need to "come together" what drove us apart... was it a move to commissioning maybe? #WeNurses https://twitter.com/stevengrimbleby/status/1618711029495771136
@LeanneHPatrick
26 January 2023 20:47
@WeNurses I think the main issue is that nurses aren't badly paid compared to the average UK salary. We're just badly paid for the jobs that we do and it's been good to see open discussion about how this leads to people walking away. #WeNurses
@jomwlever
26 January 2023 20:47
@WeNurses The Organisation I am at did not meet the threshold for striking, so not sure if I would feel more passionate about it or not. I already try and take opportunities to encourage/be part of positive change at work and it is encouraged where I work #WeNurses
@Flo55y70
26 January 2023 20:48
@WeNurses I think the whole issue of poor cultures within some institutions where staff are just expected to keep quiet and get on with things. Speaking up frowned upon, or given lip service . Toxic cultures and patient harm are still not addressed effectively #wenurses

@Flo55y70 We did used to use "spare time" to talk about best practice, CPD etc When @AgencyNurse started @WeNurses it was to connect siloed nurses outside of NHS, but everyone flocked to connect, when did this time start to erode? #WeNurses

@LeanneHPatrick @WeNurses Yes good to hear. There are still those who think we are somehow beneath other professions. I went to a talk at my sons school and the careers adviser described nursing as one of the lesser professional degrees ‘ not like doing medicine’ I was furious #wenurses

@WeNurses @LeanneHPatrick I’ve not heard any negatives. The citizens I speak to understand nursing’s position and respect it. The press can say what they like. We are trusted and respected. #WeNurses

@WeNurses @LeanneHPatrick Nurses aren’t generally considered ‘powerful’. We put others before ourselves. This is the first time in living memory that we’ve stood up for ourselves by striking. Things will change #WeNurses

@WeNurses I think the afc banding system needs reviewed. Is a band 5 ward nurse the equivalent of a band 5 autonomous Community nurse? Roles have changed and expanded but the banding hasn't changed to keep up. If a Health visitor is a Band 7 then why is a district nurse a band 6? #WeNurses

@Nurse_SMM @WeNurses #WeNurses I have found the focus from news agencies to be more on the impact of the action on patients and quite confrontational rather than focusing on what brought the profession to this point. I felt more passionately that action needed to be taken because of this approach
